1970 - GM Nap Fernandez transfered to 4th Flr. of Garcia Bldg. Rizal Avenue (Avenida) in Santa Cruz, Manila and the gym was called Tiger's Claw Gym, the Art in Yao-Yan Karate Style. The Chief Instructor was Master Orlando "Bhoy" Fernandez and the Assistant Chief Instructor was Master Julio "Julius" Villaflores.

1971 - GM Nap Fernandez transfered to the 3rd Flr. of VPH Building Quezon Blvd. in Quiapo, Manila. The name of the gym was Dragon Palm Self-Defense Gym. The Chief Instructor of the gym was Master Julio "Julius" Villaflores, and his Assistant Chief Instructor was Master Ike Amata of Bacolod, City.

1972 - The letter O of Yao was changed into W, for Philippine identity (Yaw-Yan) the very own Philippine Martial Arts these was also the Birth of Yaw-Yanism, its spiritual teachings.

The History of Philippine Yaw-Yan Foot Boxing League (PYFBL)

It was year 1969 when the Yao-Yan Karate Association was originally founded by Master Napoleon A. Fernandez. His teaching of martial arts was centered on the mastery of Arnis, Judo, Karate and AIKIDO. Through his expertise, and together with Professor Julio E. Villaflores, Orlando (Boy) Fernandez, and Rene Belen his chief instructors, he was able to develop students who were not only physically alert but also mentally disciplined and worth to be called as disciples who can be a good citizen and a law-abiding individuals.

Master Napoleon A. Fernandez gathered his students at the Balintawak Pacific Miles, Quezon City as their training ground where ARJUKASA was known to be the gym name.

Among his successful students were Armando Refato, Boy Manahan, Levi Ignacio, Rene Belen, Ernie (The Sword) Ortega, Ruben Obugasion and many more who are now managing their respective schools of martial arts.

1970, ARJAKUSA was renamed into Philippines Yao-Yan Fighting Association, and the training venue was also transferred at Rizal Avenue (Avenida), Garcia Building in Santa Cruz, Manila. Eagle's Claw was the chosen name of the Gym.

Furthermore, year 1971 training area was again moved to BPH Building in Quiapo, Manila where the gym was recognized as Dragon Palm Gym. In this year, the association was able to organize set of officers in order to strengthen its objectives.

Before the martial law was declared on 1972, the letter O of Yao was changed to W, giving its full name from Yao-Yan to Yaw-Yan, patterned to Philippine setting, at the same time the proclamation of Philippine Yaw-Yan Foot Boxing League. Of course, Master Napoleon A. Fernandez, Professor Julio E. Villaflores and the two recognized chief instructors manned the said martial arts gym.

The operation of the Philippine Yaw-Yan Foot Boxing League from North Capital Region was expanded down to south in the Visayas and Mindanao. Professor Julio E. Villaflores was tasked to organize the virtue vested by Master Napoleon A. Fernandez, originator. It was on the year 1974 when the Hurricane Gym in Malbog Alegria, Cebu was publicly known. The rigid training of Foot Boxing techniques among the students were heartily shared by the founder of Philippine Yaw-Yan Foot Boxing League, then later was transfered to the queen city of the south, Cebu City.

At this moment, PYFBL has continue sharing his martial arts technique and develop more YAW-YAN members, gladiators, instructors, professors, masters and grand masters not only in the Philippine archipelago but also in other continents.

Hello from Vietnam

To my Yaw Yan brothers,

It has been a long time since I had contact with any of my fellow students in the old Pasay Gym in Libertad. I was just watching you tube videos of Yaw Yan and I notice Yasay in one of my videos. He is a grown up man now. Time really flies. I have been staying abroad for 17 years.

I am Jojo Felix, Yaw yan member since 1991. My instructor if I can remember it right was sir Arnold Sabejon. I also remember the legendary sir Emiliano Zapata, and sir Dacuyan. My last visit to Philippines was June 2008. I did not have the chance to visit the gym. I will probably come back December this year and wish to visit Yaw yan Pasay GYM. My house is actually walking distance because I live in Edang street. I have a 5 year old son and I am hoping that he can be a Yaw yan member once he reaches the right age.

I heard that Grand Master Nap Fernandez suffered a stroke? What is his condition now? How is he doing? This news made me really sad. Hopefully he is in a better condition as of now.

I hope to see fellow members soon in my next visit to the Philippines.

Fernando Poe Jr. was his idol. What the late King of Philippine Movies did, former action star Tony Bernal emulated.

When Poe became director, Bernal would follow suit. At the time Poe threw his hat into the political ring, Bernal was helping his wife Joy Trinio in her work as a barangay kagawad in Quiapo.

Poe got to act with Bernal when the latter was starting his movie career in the early ‘70s and he was making name for himself in martial arts fare with Rey Malonzo, Robert Lee and other karatekas.

Is it only accidental that Bernal would suffer the same tragic fate—death by brain aneurism?

“Parehong-pareho ni ‘manager’ (Poe’s pet name),” said Trinio who has been Bernal’s life partner for almost 10 years.

Trinio was shaking her head as she recounted her husband’s last moments.

“Mga alas singko y medya ng umaga no’ng Sunday (March 8) nang sumpungin siya,” she recalled.

Bernal collapsed at once after he trembled, according to Trinio, and a house help had to bring him down from the fourth floor of the building along Avenida Rizal where the couple was staying.

The victim was rushed to Philippine General Hospital but Trinio was informed right there that Bernal got a slim chance of survival.

“Pero ipinahanda ko pa rin ang ICU. Lahat ginawa ko. Bumili pa ako ng pump para sa kanya,” Trinio said in between sighs.

Two neurologists were assigned to Bernal. “Ipina-CT scan ko rin siya sa tapat ng PGH,” she informed.

Until now, she could not accept his death, she confessed.

“Parang may trauma ako,” she said, again shaking her head. “I feel na para akong nakalutang. Dito nga, parang nakikita ko pa siya na lumalabas ng pinto,” she related referring to the Lopez Memorial Services in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

The wife still vividly remembered the blood oozing from the nose, eyes and ears of her husband.

“May nakita na akong gano’n pero pag pala asawa mo, iba ang pakiramdam. Para akong nauupos na kandila. Hindi ko alam kung saan ako susuling. Gusto ko siyang buhayin,” she said.

Bernal expired at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bernal is survived by his wife and three children from his first marriage, one of them action starlet Jack Bernal. He’s a widower when he married Trinio but they have no kids.

At the time of his death, he was conceptualizing a film based on Poe's life. His last directorial job was “Lisensiyadong Kamao,” a Manny Pacquiao movie produced by Violett Films.

Bernal also directed “Pelukang Itim” with Alma Moreno and Eddie Gil for his own movie outfit. He also did the film bio of Maganto with Jestoni Alarcon playing a police officer.

Bernal will be interred at the Himlayang Pilipino in Tandang Sora on March 15 at 9 a.m. He was 58.

Muay thai chief shot dead inside gym

Muay thai chief Robert Valdez was shot dead reportedly by one of his former wards Saturday right inside the national training center in PhilSports in Pasig.

Police have fingered Sonny Sumale, a former member of the national team and a muay thai standout of the Philippine army, as the suspect.

Witnesses, including someone close to Valdez, said another former coach and national player was responsible for the shooting. The witnesses said the former coach shot Valdez while two national athletes were warming up inside the training facility and while the rest of the national squad were attending a seminar.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, bringing with him the weapon, whose caliber the police have not yet identified.

Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping, who immediately went to the Medical City where Valdez was rushed, described the incident as “unfortunate.”

He said he hoped the athletes’ morale won’t get affected by tragedy considering that the country is considered a powerhouse in muay thai, where it emerged overall champion in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and runner-up in the 2007 edition.

“Whatever it is, we accept responsibility with what happened because it occurred in our premises,” said the PSC chief who immediately asked for a report from his security forces detailed at the venue.

PO2 Higino Dancel said the police are still trying to find the motive for the shooting while Angping was at a loss as to how the suspect managed to slip a gun inside the training center when he had previously issued an order that all firearms be deposited at the PhilSports complex’s entry points.

More than half of 1,000-plus members of the national training pool are enlisted men in the armed forces, and may have access to firearms.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Peping Cojuangco declined to comment until a thorough report was made.

Valdez was in the thick of preparation for the Battle of the Best, a semi-pro event among members of the national team, training pool and the champions who emerged from the division championships of the Philippines Olympic Festival.

Valdez was credited for putting the sport into the mainstream in the ’80s after having studied it in Thailand. He served as fight coach to celebrities Robin Padilla, Judy Ann Santos, Dingdong Dantes and Angel Locsin.

Aside from security concerns, the Philippine Sports Commission wants to formulate a set of ironclad rules on discipline among national sports associations in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of muay thai chief Robert Valdez.

PSC chair Harry Angping said the PSC will schedule a dialogue with the Philippine Olympic Committee and its member NSAs on the “house-cleaning” that should be done within the ranks of the Olympic family.

“Stricter guidelines on discipline and respect for authority should be instilled on the coaches, athletes and even leaders of the NSAs,” said Angping.

Police reports show that Valdez, president of the Muay Association of the Philippines, was gunned down reportedly by former muay coach and Southeast Asian Games medalist Sonny Sumales inside his office at the PhilSports compound in Pasig City on Saturday.
Witnesses said Valdez and Sumales were heard arguing when three gunshots rang out of the complex.

A member of the Philippine Army, Sumales reportedly got irked when Valdez chided him to stop harassing a female member of the RP team, Kristina Custodio.

The 40-year-old Valdez was immediately brought to Medical City where he died from shots to his body, lower armpit and left shoulder.

“It should serve as a wakeup call,” said Angping. “It’s not yet too late, we still have time to instill discipline among all NSA leaders and their coaches and athletes.”

“That kind of tragedy will never happen again if coaches and athletes are more disciplined,” said Angping, who was among the first to rush to the scene of the crime.

As an added precautionary measure, Angping said he would issue a memorandum forbidding the entry of firearms inside the PSC-owned compound and other PSC training facilities.

THE suspected killer of Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP) president Robert Valdez was arrested yesterday morning, a few hours before the sports leader was laid to rest at the Blue Mosque in Maharlika Village, Taguig.

Former national athlete Sunny Sumales, an Army man, was nabbed in Sierra Madre, Quezon by a Special Action Force of the Philippine Army during a special operation conducted before dawn yesterday. He is now under the custody of the Philippine Army and is expected to be turned over to the Philippine National Police (PNP) today, according to MAP secretary-general Red Dumuk.

Valdez was buried following an Islamic ritual 24 hours after he died. Under Islam tradition, Muslims should be laid to rest 24 hours after death.

“He underwent traditional (Islamic) course. He was bathed,” said Dumuk.

The MAP secretary-general was among those who attended the burial along with Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping and POC secretary-general Steve Hontiveros.

This developed as Angping said the gun ban he will implement in all PSC- supervised sports complexes should be employed as soon as possible.

“Shortly after our flag- raising today (Monday) at the Philsports Arena, I’ll already announce about the gun ban and then followed by a formal memo,” he said in a text message.

The suspect in the killing being an enlisted Army officer is allowed to carry firearms with him.“I think that practice should be stopped. Athletes should not be allowed to carry firearms with them while in training,” said the PSC chairman.

Probers are still determining the motive behind the killing of the man credited for spreading the popularity of muay in the country.

A possible angle was Valdez’s refusal to accept Sumales back into the national team after being booted out in 2007.

The other involved the suspect’s reported courting of a 15-year-old member of the national training pool of which the MAP president is not in favor.

Whatever the cause, Valdez’s family vowed to seek justice behind his death.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor Justin Levens, 28, and his wife Sara McLean-Levens, 25, were found dead in bed in their Laguna Niguel, Calif., home Wednesday afternoon, police say. Both had gunshot wounds to the head.

"This is a possible murder-suicide with him being the shooter," says Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino. "We also confiscated some prescription drugs found in the home, mostly pain-killing and anti-depressant type drugs, but we don't know whose name they're in or if there were prescriptions for them."

Amormino adds that no suicide note was found, and that an unknown-caliber handgun was retrieved at the scene.

"The reason why it's a possible murder-suicide is because of the position of the bodies as well as the weapon found," Amormino says.

The couple had been married for about a year, and were found by the wife's mother, who hadn't heard from her daughter in five days, according to Amormino. The wife's mother discovered the bodies Wednesday afternoon and called 911.

Autopsies were being performed Thursday, and further tests are being conducted. "There's still more work to do," Amormino says, adding it's unclear if Levens had a criminal history.

The deaths come four months after another tragedy in the mixed martial arts world: In September, fighter Evan Tanner was found dead in the desert. Levens lost to Tanner in a UFC match in 2006.

With ten years as a pro, a world title belt and scores of megafights over the years, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has probably seen it all when it comes to fan adulation. Well, at least until he arrived in the Philippines with UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta on Sunday and saw 4,000 fans waiting to see his open workout at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

“I was really surprised,” said the ‘Iceman’ of the reception he received at the third largest shopping mall in the world. “It was kinda shocking how many people actually showed up to watch me work out for an hour. It’s crazy. I didn’t expect it to be that big here. I thought it was a new market for us.”

You may think the Philippines is a new market for the UFC - and technically it is - but with the organization’s relationship with the ABS-CBN network and nationwide media coverage, it has taken over the country in a way that has even stunned Fertitta.

“We’ve always had high ambitions and high expectations for what we’re doing with growing the UFC, but it’s kind of cool now to see it actually happening and unfolding right before our eyes,” said Fertitta, who is on the last leg of a trip that has seen him spread the UFC gospel in the United Kingdom, Dublin, France, Germany, and now the Philippines, over the last week. “I think to some extent we’ve underestimated ourselves over the past couple of years. If you go to a lot of these countries, we’re very well known.”

Fertitta first got a taste of the UFC’s international potential during a trip with Liddell and UFC President Dana White to Ibiza, an island off the coast of Spain, in 2005.

“People knew Chuck when he was walking down the street, and that was before we were on TV,” said Fertitta.

Nothing could have prepared him for Sunday’s reception though, as some fans waited up to three hours to see the mixed martial arts icon.

“Chuck is a rock star over here,” he said. “He walks in the hotel and there are people all over him, and then we ended up doing a public training session and over 4,000 people showed up at the Mall of Asia just to see him. It was very interesting, even at times a little bit scary because there were so many people there.”

“I talked to bunch of people there, but it was really hard because if I got too close to the line, people started piling over security,” added Liddell. “It was an interesting thing, how fanatical the fans are. But it’s great having the fans behind you, and that they understand that this is a sport and not having that negative look at it. It’s always good to have people appreciate you for what you do and the things you’ve done.”

Even a task as mundane as checking into their hotel turned into a big event.

“When we came to the hotel, we checked in about 6:30 in the morning and there were about 20 photographers waiting for us. Then we held a press conference at nine and there were multiple TV stations and reporters. It’s beyond the imagination. They have a full day of press for us tomorrow, and I’ve got to be honest, I knew that we were growing internationally, but I don’t think I really had an appreciation for the amount of momentum we truly have until I came over here and saw it for myself.”

A key part of the UFC’s success in the Philippines can be traced to the aforementioned relationship with the ABS-CBN network.

“This happens to be one of the best partnerships we have, with ABS-CBN, the largest media company in the Philippines,” said Fertitta. “They have really gotten behind us and we’re the number one rated program on their sports network, so it’s carried over very well and the UFC brand is very strong here. We’re
talking to them about the possibility of bringing a live event to Manila as part of our international expansion.”

A show in the Philippines, the home of boxing superstar and national icon Manny Pacquiao, is a no-brainer for the diehard fight fans of the nation, whom Fertitta describes as having “a deep understanding of the sport.” Summer of 2009 is being projected for the UFC’s initial foray into Southeast Asia, with the plan not only to showcase the company’s established stars, but to also give the event a local flavor.

“It will be a combination of bringing over some of our stars and then hopefully having some local Filipino fighters, and maybe bringing in some of the guys from Japan and South Korea,” said Fertitta, who believes the UFC’s success in the country can be boiled down to a couple key elements.

“First of all, based upon our popularity and success in the United States, that helps in a lot of these international markets,” he said. “Entertainment is one of the number one exports that we have in America, and a lot of these countries like to follow what is big and what is happening in the US, and we’ve built a strong brand. But beyond that, I think it has to do with the fact that we have a great partner in ABS-CBN. We’re broadcast in every home, they’re really getting behind it and really promoting it. I think that makes a big difference.”

It also doesn’t hurt that as Fertitta points out, “We’re probably more mainstream in the Philippines than we are in the US.”

The UFC owner says all this at 6pm local time on Sunday, and as he looks to the television, what does he see? UFC programming. It’s a long way from the dark ages of mixed martial arts, and Fertitta only sees bright days ahead – not only in the United States, but around the world.

“The plans are all coming into place,” said Fertitta. “We’re going to be moving the show around the world, and we’re creating the UFC global footprint.”

Slam-bam action at the URCC 12

“Bakbakan na! [The fight is on!]” has been the rallying call of the young but dynamic mixed martial arts tradition in the Philippines and with that commenced the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) 12 entitled “Supremacy.” The thick crowd in the A. Venue Events Hall in Makati proves that there was no sign of waning down of Pinoys’ enthusiasm toward the URCC.

The 10-bout fight night kicked off with the match between Jerry Legaspi of Hybrid Yaw Yan and Anthony Dominic So of Mmax Combat. It was a quick fight with Legaspi pulling off a clean rear naked choke on So that resulted to the latter’s submission. The next bout also ended fast with Carry Bullos of Sel-Def Mixed Martial Arts Team besting Arnel Arancina of Gym Kata with ground-and-pound tactics followed by a choke.

In fight number three, Lando Espinosa of Elorde Mixed Martial Arts Team wowed the crowd when he tapped out John Naval, a veteran Kyokushinkai karate fighter of Team Silver Storm with an arm bar. The fourth match of the night also ended with submission with Robert Sardone of Iron Gladiator emerging victorious over Noble Ampoc of Yaw Yan Ardigma. The next bout saw veteran URCC fighter Roldan Cartajena of Yaw Yan sneaked in a rear choke over Marlon Abrigosa, of SB Streetfighting, who lost via tap out.

The sixth match of the evening was a fight between big boys Dennis Valmores of SB Streetfighting and Ed Uy of Hybrid Yaw Yan. Uy won the match when the referee halted the contest after Valmores can no longer defend himself from his opponent’s barrage of punches. Fight number seven drove the crowd wild when Panchito Estrada of the Elorde Mixed Martial Arts Team took on Iranian fighter Seyed Razi Jabbari. Jabbari absorbed a lot of punishment from Estrada during the early moments of the fight but managed to make a comeback and win via rapid fire striking. The referee stopped the match when Jabbari’s blows went unanswered.

Kevin Belingon of Lakay Wushu retained his flyweight title after beating Magellan Perez of Elorde Mixed Martial Arts Team in the eighth fight through an arm lock. Belingon caught the attention of local mixed martial scene when he defeated URCC legend Richard Lasprilla last year.

Lino “The Terminator” Tagacay of Gym Kata and Philipppine Army Team, the reigning URCC bantamweight champion, however lost his title to Justin Cruz of Fokai, Guam on the second to the last match of the evening. A boxer by training, Tagacay who is a stand-up fighter managed to dominate both two rounds until the jujitsu stylist succeeded in wrapping an ankle lock on him. The fighter from Guam though declared the winner, collapsed from exhaustion after the fight.

The last match, dubbed as the “super fight” of the night is a clash between two URCC reigning champions: Eduard Folayang of Lakay Wushu Team, holder of the welterweight title and Caloy Baduria, holder of the middleweight title. The final bout lasted 3:41 seconds in the first round with Folayang living up to his moniker “Landslide” raining crushing blows on Baduria’s face prompting the referee to stop the fight. One URCC commentator once described Folayang’s exceptional physique as resembling the wooden statue of the native highlands hunter in Baguio. Folayang’s superb conditioning indeed served him well in dominating the last two URCCs.

Also during the event, URCC founder Alvin Aguilar bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award to Master Napoleon “Nap” Fernandez, founder of the Filipino martial art of Yaw Yan (short for sayaw ng kamatayan [dance of death]). Another notable Pinoy fighter recognized during the evening was Vince Soberano, the only Filipino who won a muay thai championship in Thailand.

Thank you so much for all your prayers and support. Once again, the power of prayers and good wishes has made its magic.

This is good news my brothers in the arts! After almost 2 weeks at the hospital, GM Nap was finally released. Although he now had complications due to the stroke, he is now out of clear danger. he is now regaining strength at our Caloocan Gym branch.

“Experiencing the Filipino Martial Arts: The Way of Yaw-Yans”
YAW-YAN Training Seminar, March-April 2006

Objectives:
· The training seminar intends to help the children from “Lingap Bata” Center. The “Lingap Bata” Center is an institution that provides shelter, protection, and care to children that are less fortunate.
· To provide an opportunity for the general public to know more about the Filipino Martial Arts, particularly about the empty-handed style of Yaw-Yan.
· To provide vital information about effective techniques that can be used to defend one’s self against rapists, thieves and other felonious individuals.
· To give demonstrations and teach about a Bodyguard’s Protection Program.
· To share information and enhance the fighting skills while inside the ring.

Proceedings:
· A minimal fee shall be charged to those who are interested to join. The seminar fee shall be Php300.00 for every Yaw-Yan practitioner/member and Php500.00 for a non-Yaw-Yan individual. Both rates shall have a reservation fee of Php200.00, which would be deductible from the total seminar fee.
· No refunds shall be available after the payments had been made.
· Since much focus shall be given to the attendees, the seminar shall be limited to a maximum number of 90 participants.
· Various well-known fighters and instructors shall be present during the whole event to help out and share knowledge. This lineup would include the “Pride of Yaw-Yan” himself, Mr. Emiliano Zapata.
· On the last day of the seminar, G.M. Nap Fernandez shall give demonstrations and share valuable techniques to the participants.

Itinerary (Target Date: March 31 - April 01, 2006):
· March 31, 2006
o 6:00 pm - 6:45 pm: Demonstration of YAW-YAN practitioners.
o 6:45 pm - 7:00 pm: Preparation for training.
o 7:00 pm - 7:45 pm: Stretching and warm up session.
o 7:45 pm - 8:00 pm: Break.
o 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm: Training (Basic Kicks, Punches, Elbows, Knees, and Techniques).
o 9:30 pm - 10:00 pm: Stretching and cool down session.

· April 01, 2006
o 9:00 am - 9:45 am: Stretching and warm-up session.
o 9:45 am - 10:00 am: Break.
o 10:00 am - 12:00 pm: Training (Self-defense and Combat Applications).
o 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm: Lunch.
o 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm: Rest and relaxation.
o 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm: Training (Fighter’s Training Program). This session shall provide participants a taste of how Yaw-Yan fighters train everyday.
o 3:30 pm - 4:00: pm: Closing Ceremonies and distribution of giveaways.

Venue:
· The seminar shall be held at the Podium Deck (PD) Level, Pioneer Highlands, Pioneer corner Madison Streets, Mandaluyong City 1550.

Dress Code:
· All participants shall be required to wear clean, decent, and comfortable clothing preferably the following:
o Tops: T-shirts, tanktops, or sandos. Fitting tops for females.
o Bottoms: Shorts (Either Fight shorts, Sport shorts, or Board shorts) or Pants (Either Sweat pants or Jogging pants).
o Underwear: Sport briefs. Sport bras for females.
o Gears: Hand wraps, groin cups, mouthpieces, and supporters are optional.

- Richard won by decision also on the 3rd round!Richard got the Decision by 1 point on one of the judge's score card

- Romonito won during the 3rd round! This turned out to be a tough fight. A few fouls, also very close

- Bryant "D Tiger" won on the 3rd round!Bryant won this close match by 1 point also. This one could have went either way.
